Francois Pils, Grenadier Pils (1785-1867)
4 pencil, ink and watercolour drawings,
Napoleon mounting his horse, combat d`Amstetten, Dranchowitz and Drisviatoui,
two inscribed and dated 1812/1813,
largest 7.5 x 12in.
Grenadier Pils (1785-1867), also Marshal Oudinot`s `valet de chambre` followed him on the battlefields of Austerlitz, Jena, Essling and Wagram, and he was also known for his artistic talent. It is said he liked to sketch the theatre of operations and he made drawings of the events he witnessed.
He later became a student of Horace Vernet`s and his son was Isidore Pils, whose name was quite famous in the second half of the 19th century.
These pictures relate to the famous journal of "Grenadier Pils" (Journal de marche du grenadier Pils, 1804-1814).
"Combat d`Amstetten" is a skirmish in November 1805 (one month before Austerlitz) during the campaign in Austria.
"Drisviatoui 15 juillet 1812" refers to a position occupied by Marshal Oudinot during the invaision of Russia in summer 1812.
"Dranchowitz a huit heures du soir le 19 mai 1813" refers to the retreat of the French through Saxony, during the German campaign in 1813, the figures on the left are Napoleon`s Mameluke Imperial personal bodyguards.

If you purchase multiple Lots from the same auction, we will combine packaging/deliveries to reduce the Shipping Costs if this is possible. For lots for which Shipping Costs cannot be calculated, such as furniture, or larger items, upon request you can obtain a recommended Shipping Company either in advance of the sale or after you have purchased. Gorringes do not offer international shipping.
Estimates of Shipping Costs are based on the low estimate, whilst the actual cost is based on Hammer Price.
Items not possible for in-house postage and packing include Tea/dinner services, large quantities of ceramics, any lots containing liquids, ALL bladed items.
PLEASE NOTE, as of 22nd April 2024, all "bladed items" will be prohibited for sending in the post. This is as per Royal Mail's prohibited items list. Royal Mail say that you must not send any item that has a blade, in particular, ‘Bladed Articles’ as defined by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 or ‘Bladed Products’ as defined by the Offensive Weapons Act 2019. Such items include, Cutlery knives, Scissors with sharp edges, Sporting equipment with a blade, Replica and antique knives (including those used for re-enactment purposes), Handmade and bespoke knives, Open razors (where the blade is exposed), Any axe, Any sword, Survival knives etc.

Postage and packing can be arranged by the Auctioneers and will be charged at cost of postage/delivery plus an minimum charge of £10 for the first Lot and £2 for each additional lot larger items may attract a higher fee Lot. Insurance can be arranged subject to the terms of the carriers. However all packing will be at the purchaser’s risk. Gorringes recommend Mailboxes and Alban Shipping for high value or delicate items.
