Two Italian maiolica albarello, c.1730, by Francesco Antonio Saverio Grue, Castelli (1686-1747), one depicting St. Cecilia seated in a landscape alongside an inscribed pedestal, the other of St. Francis in the wilderness holding a skull, the tallest inscribed to the back 'Dr A Grue f', 22cm and 24cm high These two albarello belong to a group of pharmacy jars depicting Saints produced by Grue c.1729-1731, with several examples on display at the Museo Nazionale della Ceramica Duca di Martina, Napoli. Most of these albarello were produced by Grue for use in the Pharmacy of Charterhouses (monasteries). Tallest heavily crazed, Minor small firing marks and tiny rim chips but essentially both in good condition. A pair of late 18th century Sevres ormolu mounted porcelain candlesticks, in the manner of Chappuis L'Aine, decorated with panels of exotic birds and flowers reserved against a gilt green ground on ormolu feet, 17.5cm high overall Height of actual vases 15.25cm, these are fixed onto the ormolu bases with some sort of black glue like material, both vases in good honest condition, some very slight rubbing and marking to the gilding particularly around the extremities but no real damage noted, some oxidisation to the ormolu feet. A mid Victorian ormolu mounted walnut pietra dura top centre table of rectangular form, the top decorated with an arrangement of specimen marbles, mostly in geometric forms but including stylised fleur de lys, on turned tapered legs with H stretcher, 112cm wide, 60cm deep, 73cm high Overall in fair but slightly neglected condition, in the main the walnut is of a good rich brown tone, ormolu looks complete but now starting to oxidise to a dull finish, central pietra dura with a few small losses near the corners but otherwise looking good, underframe dirty and faded with one lower leg in particular heavily bleached and wormed, quite probably was raised on ormolu feet or castors in the past. A Guild of Handicraft Ltd silver mounted decanter designed by Charles Robert Ashbee, the Whitefriars green glass of ovoid form with slender, tapering neck mounted with hinged collar and cover, with sweeping sinuous handle and hinged brace, the cover mounted with cabochon inset scrolling finial London 1993, 18cm deep, 23cm high Literature: An identical decanter is illustrated: Alan Crawford, C.R. Ashbee Architect, Designer & Romantic Socialist, London, 1985, p. 331, fig. 166. Crawford recounts Ashbee's interest in three broken, bulbous bottles of green glass, unearthed in the course of the clearing of the building site for the Magpie and Stump in 1893. In his romantic enthusiasm for the archaeology of the Chelsea area he kept the bottles, noting 'it was doubtless bottles of that shape....good solid glass, from which Falstaff and his worthies drank their sack'. Four years later, James Powell and Sons produced more refined versions of the bottles in thinner glass which Ashbee then cased in silver. At the time of production, the cost of these pieces was a mere GB3 or GB4 owing to the small amount of silver involved. Very good condition, silver a little tarnished but no real faults noted.
