An Egyptian painted gesso and wood portrait statuette of a woman, probably Middle Kingdom, 12th dynasty, 1991-1802 BC, the arms made as separate pieces, inscribed ‘Tyndale collection’ label to base, 30.5cm high excluding later wood plinth cf. a similar Egyptian wood figure dated to the 12th dynasty in the British Museum accession No. EA2373 and another in the Brooklyn Museum, New York, accession No. 86.226.11. Provenance- label for Tyndale collection, indicating the figure was taken from a tomb at Luxor, probably in the first decade of the 20th century. The collection label almost certainly refers to the artist Walter Tyndale (British, 1855–1943), who visited Egypt twice around 1906-10 and wrote two books about his travels entitled L'Égypte d'hier et d'aujourd'hui, published by Paris Hachette, 1910 and An artist in Egypt, published by Hodder & Stoughton, 1912. There are two Ancient Egyptian shabti for Satmut which were excavated at Gurob with labels for the Tyndale collection in the National Museums, Liverpool (one is accession number 56.5.78), Walter Tyndale worked with Currelly Charles Currelly at Deir el-Bahari 1906-07. Currelly had worked at Gurob in the 1903-04 season and may have given the National Museums, Liverpool shabti to Walter Tyndale. Lots of small areas of flaking to the painted and just so decoration. The right arm is loose and will detach and shows evidence of old glue around the area, the left arm looks as though it has been later glued, there are small worm losses to the base, now stuck on the later mahogany base with water stained Tindale collection label. A 19th Century Italian illumination presented by Pope Pius IX to Ireland's first Cardinal, Paul Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin, to commemorate the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, inscribed "Pius IX Pont Mar / Conceptionem Immaculatum / Beatissimae Virginis Maria / Definivit die 8th Dec 1854 / Atque / Hiberniam Sanctorum Insulam / Marimo Illustravit Honore / Paulo Cullen Archiepiscopo / Dublinensi Cum Principibus Sacri / Colleaii Cadinalum collocato / die 25 Junii 1866", with central depiction of the Annunciation, bordered by ornate scrollwork and cartouches decorated with armorials and named saints, parchment overall 70 x 49cm, housed within an ornate Florentine carved giltwood frame, overall 80cm wide, 116cm high, Paul Cardinal Cullen (29 April 1803 – 24 October 1878) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin and previously of Armagh, and the first Irish cardinal. His Ultramontanism spearheaded the Romanisation of the Catholic Church in Ireland and ushered in the devotional revolution experienced in Ireland through the second half of the 19th century and much of the 20th century. A trained biblical theologian and scholar of ancient languages, Cullen crafted the formula for papal infallibility at the First Vatican Council. Cullen paid frequent visits to Rome. He took part in the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1854 and with the 18th centenary of the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul in 1867, when he stayed at the Irish College. He attended all the sessions of Vatican I, taking an active part in its deliberations. Towards the close of the council, at the express wish of the Central Commission, he proposed a formula for the definition of papal infallibility. It was a matter of great delicacy, as promoters of the definition were split in various factions, some anxious to assign a wide range to the pope's decisions, and others would set forth in a somewhat indefinite way the papal prerogative. He was the most important Irish political figure in the 30 years between Daniel O'Connell and Charles Stuart Parnell. In political matters, Cullen made it a rule to support every measure, whatever its provenance, conducive to the interests of his vision for the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. Desmond Bowen considers Cardinal Cullen "a cautious, suspicious, and usually shrewd product of the Roman school of diplomacy". Cullen also started the practice of Irish priests wearing Roman collars and being called "Father" (instead of "Mister") by their parishioners. Parchment showing undulation throughout but otherwise looks to be in good fresh order, some tiny white light mould marks showing most notable on the dark blue behind the Virgin but probably also elsewhere, these look to be light white mould on the surface of the work which is under glass, main Florentine frame has suffered much rubbing over the years with losses of the original gilding, the top Irish harp motif is held on with blu-tac, presumably there were other motifs at the lower corners which are now missing, arms at the bottom of the frame are inscribed with his motto Ponit Animam Pro Amicis. (on the plinth), 51.5cm high Note: Turning to sculpture late in his career, Frederic Leighton is considered to be the father of New School sculpture, in particular for his Athlete wrestling with a Python of 1877 and The Sluggard. The Sluggard is well-known and celebrated, and casts are in a number of prominent museum collections including Tate Gallery (London), the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford), Royal Academy of Arts (London), and the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Arts (Minneapolis, USA). The inspiration for the Sluggard came from Leighton’s life-drawing model Gaetano Valona stretching during a break between poses. The work was originally called Athlete Awakening from Sleeping, and was first executed in 1882. Leighton struck a balance between the real and the ideal in this life-size bronze sculpture of a perfect male body. Earlier models include a fig leaf which was a convention intended to neutralise any sexual appeal while the sculpture was on public display. This bronze is a sketch for the finished work and one of an edition cast by Singer and Sons of Frome, Somerset. It is the version that was produced for the collectors’ market, a reduced version of the finished work never being cast. Singer and Sons set up their new foundry capable of casting using the lost wax and sand casting processes in 1888. Rights to market the model from 1890 were bought by Arthur Leslie Collie who sold these and other New School sculpture from his joint premises with Agnew’s in Old Bond Street. A bronze cast which bore his name and that of the founder Singer and Sons was exhibited at the Arts and Crafts exhibition of 1890. By 1901 Collie was no longer associated with Agnew’s and by 1906 he was no longer listed in the art directory. Casts made under Collie’s name can be accurately dated to this period.
