A set of fourteen 17th century style oak dining chairs including a pair of carvers, with brass studded leather backs and seats on turned and squared underframes, carvers 59cm wide, 70cm deep, 115cm high These look to date to the mid to late 20th century, carvers look a little older and are of a much darker blackish tone with rubbed extremities and equally much dark olive brown leather, with six in light tan upholstery and six in olive brown upholstery. This looks to be a set of eight chairs including the carvers to which six slightly later additions have been added being those with the tan upholstery, overall in fair to good condition, one or two with a little wobble to the frames and light scuffing and wear to the leather which shows up more on the light tan than the dark. An early 17th century Indo-Portuguese ivory inset hardwood travelling chest with brass loop handles, steel escutcheon and drop front opening to reveal an arrangement of six drawers, the central one with concealed base compartment, 36cm wide, 26cm deep, 23cm high. CITES Submission reference JRCZDK9E Overall of a rich brown tone, mounts to the corners and handles look original, steel bosses and escutcheon to the front possibly later additions, certainly something is missing above the escutcheon with appears to align with where the screws for the lock have started to show through, comes with a working key, internally good condition, no key for the central drawer lock, inset ivory decoration has numerous small losses and later replacements. A pair of George III cream painted and parcel gilt settees, in the manner of George Brookshaw (1751-1823), each with triple roundel cresting rail, buttoned padded backs and sides and buttoned D shaped seats raised on turned and fluted tapered legs, fitted brass castors, 212cm wide, 71cm deep, 94cm high These settees were originally commissioned by Stephen Cave Esq (d. 1838), who was part of the Bristol Banking Firm, Ames, Cave & Co. They were part of a large suite and made for Cleve Hill House, Mangotsfield, near Bristol. The house was remodelled by Cave in the late 18th early 19th century, and it would seem no expense was spared. The gardens, which in the mid-18th century had been designed by Thomas Wright, otherwise known as the - Wizard of Durham, were redesigned to incorporate a Pleasure Garden including hot houses, large aviaries and a riding school. After Stephen Caves death in 1838 his son Daniel took over and made further changes to the house which were considered ill-judged alterations, probably moving more towards the Victorian era. The fourth son of Stephen Cave and Anne Daniel had properties at 13 Lowndes Street, London and St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados and by descent to Laurence Trent Cave (d.1899) second son of Charles Cave, of Ditcham Park, Petersfield, 13 Lowndes Square, London and St. Nicholas Abbey, Barbados, and by descent to Charles John Philip Cave, MA, FSA, FRPS (d.1950), eldest son of Laurence Trent Cave, of Ditcham Park, Petersfield and S.t Nicholas Abbey, Barbados and by descent to Laurence Charles Henry Cave (d.1981), eldest son of Charles John Philip Cave of Bletchingly, Surrey and St. Nicholas Abbey, Barbados and by descent to TL Col. Stephen Cave OBE who sold at Christie's London, 17 November 1988, lot 50 the suite of twenty armchairs and a pair of settees. The settee's which bear the date 1802, formed part of the drawing-room or parlour furniture. Both look to have seen some repainting many years ago, paint work now a little faded and discoloured with the floral panels and other floral decoration more notably faded, gilding is also now somewhat matted and rubbed, upholstery looks to be in fair order, frames remain solid.
