In 1539, the house was surrendered by the abbot, William Thornton otherwise Dent and fifty monks; the abbot received a pension of 400 marks [£266 6s 8d]. At some time between 1556 and 1558 Philip Lovell was sued in Chancery by the receiver of Crown revenues in the diocese of York in respect of arrears of rents and tithes in Skelton (TNA C 1/1459/17-18). In 1595 Edward Beseley of Skelton proceeded against Philip’s grandson Thomas Lovell in the court Exchequer concerning the ownership of land near York (TNA E 134/37Eliz/Hil21). Bartholomew Traheron (c1510–1558?), protestant writer and reformer, returned to England at the beginning of 1539 and by early March was in the service of Thomas Cromwell. He is recorded as writer of letters patent under the great seal and examiner of letters patent between April 1547 and December 1549, but his examination of this patent of 14 May 1545 suggests earlier service in that office. From December 1549 to October 1553 he was keeper of the king’s library with a salary of 20 marks, while in February 1550 he was appointed a tutor to the young Henry Brandon, second duke of Suffolk. Dean of Chichester 1551-1553, he became a canon of St George’s Chapel Windsor on 10 January 1553.

Sign-manual warrant of Charles I to Sir William Uvedale, Treasurer of the Privy Chamber, to restore a pension of £50 to [the king’s cup-bearer] Edward Ellis; Whitehall, 14 May 1627 Despite the restraint of all pensions in the Privy Chamber made by the Commissioners of the Crown’s revenues Provenance: purchased at Sotheby’s sale of valuable printed books fine bindings autograph letters and historical documents, 23rd October 1967 Edward Ellis (c1590-1656) was the fourth son of Edward Ellis of Chesterton in Cambridgeshire, esquire, and grandson of Lyon Ellis, mayor of Lincoln. His father, who died in 1596, was a fellow of St John’s Cambridge in 1567, was admitted to Gray’s Inn in 1574 and as a barrister in 1577. His mother was Jane, daughter of Thomas Stoteville, of Brinkley in Cambridgeshire, esquire (died 1631). Having borne six sons and three daughters, following the death of her first husband (who left her his rights to Chesterton Ferry for life), Jane married Othowell Hill, DCL, Chancellor of the diocese of Lincoln, who was buried in Lincoln Cathedral 19 May 1616. She died 27 April 1631 in her 78th year and was buried in the nave of Westminster Abbey. Edward Ellis was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge in 1605, served as gentleman-waiter to King James I, and cup-bearer to King Charles I. In 1625-1626 it was certified that he was liable for taxation in the royal household, and not in London or Westminster, the previous area of tax liability. He made his will at Windsor in 1656, asking to be buried near his mother at Westminster. His many bequests included a gold ring to Mr Haddar, gentleman usher to ‘our late king Charles’, and a considerable sum ‘to be distributed to the late king’s poor servants’. He died unmarried and was buried at Westminster Abbey on 14 October 1656. Sir William Uvedale (1581-1652) of Wickham in Hampshire and Whitehall, MP for Portsmouth, Newport Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Petersfield at various dates between 1614 and 1640, was a gentleman of the Privy Chamber 1612-1618 before being appointed its treasurer, in which office he served until 1640, when he was appointed a member of the Council of War. He performed his duties conscientiously but lacked enthusiasm for a civil war in England. In August 1642, when Charles sent him from Nottingham to London with an answer to the Long Parliament’s Nineteen Propositions, it was therefore with the tacit understanding that he would ‘intend the business of his own fortune’. Under the stress of increasing financial embarrassment, Uvedale eventually became a passive Parliamentarian and remained a local magistrate under the Rump. He was buried at Wickham on 3 December 1652, the last of the family to sit in Parliament. RH [Sir Robert Heath], ‘Some exceptions against the petition sent up by the Lords, February 1640’ [1641] This document is an eloquent witness to the turmoil which embroiled the English church and state in the years preceding the outbreak of the English civil war, specifically following the impeachment for high treason of William Laud, archbishop of Canterbury on 18 December 1640 and continuing agitation to purify the English church, not least by the removal of bishops from the House of Lords. The document presents a discussion of six exceptions, presumably made by the House of Lords, against an unspecified petition, which is called only ‘The petition for the Hierarchy’. The petition is described as ‘desiring only the regulating of the rigour of ecclesiastical courts to suit with the temper of our laws’, and clearly discussed the outlook of the bishops, reference being made to the role of the British delegates at the anti-Arminian Synod of Dort of 1618–19, an international meeting of divines to settle disputed doctrinal controversies. The text supports confession as a means of correcting ‘notorious offenders’, but inveighs against ‘[Robert] Shelford [and John] Pocklington, the fautors of imagery, and such as are minters of ceremonies without special warrant of law’. An un-named speaker mentioned in the petition is described as an ‘exotic, bold, daring, impudent man worthy of exemplary punishment’. Finally the author engages with the form of the petition itself – ‘the multitude of hands, tag, rag, and bobtail, is base and unworthy. I dare say there are some subscribers (nay many) that are not sui juris, nor are they able (if you show them the petition) to tell, to what they subscribed’. The petition which best suits this description is that submitted from Cheshire, including 113 pages of signatures, and delivered into the House on 27 February 1641 (parliamentary Archives HL/PO/JO/5/1/7). It dissented from the opinions expressed in the ‘many petitions circulated in the country in favour of innovations in religion’, and specifically the ‘positions preached at St John’s church in Chester by Mr Samuel Eaton, a minister lately returned from New England’, perhaps the ‘bold, daring, impudent man’ referred to in the text. The petition was referred by the Lords to the newly established committee for religion on 1 March 1641. Sir Robert Heath (1575–1649) of the Inner Temple came to prominence in 1616, when he entered the service of George Villiers, later duke of Buckingham, in 1621 gaining the office of solicitor-general and a knighthood. An active parliamentarian, Heath’s position survived Buckingham’s assassination and on 23 January 1641 he was appointed a justice of king’s bench, ‘and consequent to this position he served as a messenger from the Lords to the Commons during the early months of the Long Parliament’ (ODNB). Religion played an important part in Heath’s life: an inventory of his library drawn up in 1647 suggests that his reading, other than for professional purposes, consisted largely of sacred works. He was a devout Calvinist and, although there is no evidence that he was personally dissatisfied with the structure and worship of the established church, he may have had some sympathy with moderate puritanism as he supported episcopacy but could be critical of the bishops (History of Parliament). The petition’s mention of Dr John Pocklington was timely: on 12 February 1641 the Lords heard a petition exhibited against him by one of his parishioners. They found him ‘a man, both by his practice and doctrine, to be a great instrument and introducer of innovations into the church, and a perverter of the people. In his practice, he hath been very superstitious, and full of idolatry, as bowing to the altar, and using many other gestures and ceremonies in the church, not being established by the Laws of this Realm’. He was deprived of his benefices, barred from holding any office in the church and his books ordered to be burnt at London, Cambridge and Oxford ‘by the hand of the common executioner’ (House of Lords Journal Volume 4: 12 February 1641). In 1635 Robert Shelford (c1563–1639) published Five Pious and Learned Discourses, a controversial work in which he made his Laudian sympathies clear, criticising what he saw as the puritan obsession with preaching, and worst of all calling for more friendly relations between protestants and Catholics. The book was allegedly sent to Ireland ‘to confirm our papists in their obstinacy, and to assure them that we are now coming home unto them as fast as we can’ (ODNB). Samuel Eaton (d. 1665), rector of West Kirby in Cheshire, settled in New Haven Connecticut in 1637, Eaton preaching regularly at Harvard. In 1640 he sailed for England, returning to a transformed political climate and, after the opening of the Long Parliament in November 1640, wasted no time in contributing to evolving debates concerning church government (ODNB).

She was finally broken up in 1764. Robert Arris was baptized at St Albans St Peter on 5 June 1670, the eleventh of the fourteen children of Thomas Arris, a prosperous doctor of physic and lord of the manor of Great Munden, and his wife Olive. His father died in 1683, which is presumably when Robert went to sea. He is first seen as a lieutenant on HMS Windsor Castle (George Churchill, commander) in January 1690; he was master of the Fortune prize, 1696, the Charles galley, 1696-1697, HMS Looe, 1697-1701, HMS Rye and HMS Assistance 1702-1703, HMS Pembroke (on which he saw action at the battle of Marbella on 10 March 1705), 1703-1706, HMS Ipswich, 1706-1708, HMS Kent, 1708, HMS Torbay, 1708-1710, HMS Devonshire 1710-1711 and HMS Windsor, 1711-1714. He was appointed commander in chief, River Medway and The Nore, in September 1714, and served as Commissioner of the Victualling Board from December 1714 until his death. The next year he was a resident of St James Piccadilly, when his son John was baptized on 20 February. On 17 January 1719 he was buried at St Botolph Aldgate, as Robert Arris esquire of the Victualling Office, a resident of Tower Hill, His widow Margaret, to whom he had left his entire estate by his will of 2 June 1717, married Josiah Burchett (c1666-1746) of St Martins in the Fields, MP for Sandwich 1705-1713, 1722-1741, who between 1680 and 1687 had served as a clerk to Samuel Pepys as secretary to the Admiralty
