The car is in immaculate condition, only two owners from new and with a full service history. An exceptional example of an appreciating classic, superbly presented and less than 12,000 miles from new. Presented in pristine British Racing Green, with a black Mohair roof and 18’’ alloys. The tasteful interior in cream/oatmeal leathers, coffee carpets and polished walnut veneers. The 4 litre, 32 valve, AJ-V8 engine generating 290bhp and offering 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, the top speed said to be 156mph. Coming with its original book pack, including a stamped service book, audio information and security pamphlet, in original leather wallet. A 1937 Railton Fairmile series III Drophead Coupe, reg. no. MG 5335. Completely restored by The Vintage Carriage Company, over many years, to a very high standard. Winner of the John Cobb Cup at the Railton Owners Club National meeting, at Hever Castle, in June 2002. After selling Invicta to Earl Fitzwilliam in 1933, Noel Macklin and his works manager, Leon Cushman, began searching for a new automotive venture. Inspired by the speed records being set by Hudson’s Essex-Terraplane subsidiary, Macklin secured a supply of rolling chassis from the parent company. He enlisted Reid Railton, a well-known designer of Land Speed Record cars, and commissioned coachbuilders such as Ranalah, REAL, Carbodies, and Coachcraft to design bodies for his Anglo-American hybrid. The first series of Railtons, equipped with a 4010cc Terraplane 8 engine, a three-speed manual gearbox, and improved damping, offered a superior power-to-weight ratio compared to Derby Bentleys or Lagonda M45s. The car’s striking design, including a radiator by motoring artist F. Gordon Crosby and an Invicta-style riveted bonnet, quickly made the Railton brand known for its acceleration and flexibility in top gear. In 1934, Macklin adopted the Hudson Eight rolling chassis for the second series of Railtons, featuring a two-inch longer wheelbase and a more powerful 4168cc engine. Coachcraft produced around 178 Railton Eights as Fairmile Drophead Coupes, distinguished by their swooping tails, full-flowing wings, and quad-hinged ‘suicide doors,’ of which only thirty-five are believed to survive today. We hold a huge amount of past history documents, including invoices totalling over £130,000 for past restorations, servicing etc. The car drove beautifully from its home, some 20 miles away, to our auction galleries in Lewes. John Cheere (English, 1709-1787), a cast lead figure of a Shepherdess, together with a later companion casting of a shepherd, shepherdess overall 161cm high Gorringe’s are grateful to John Davis for verifying the authenticity of the figure of the fruit seller. For a comparable figure, see his publication - Antique Garden Ornament, Antique Collectors Club, 1991, page 65. Provenance: Purchased from Mallet, London, in the 1950’s, thereafter a private collection near Ardingly, West Sussex. She in honest but weathered condition with oxidisation and algae scattered throughout, the textured square base is probably a later addition, standing upon an old and possibly original stone plinth, height of lady to base of her shoe 124cm, from base of the lead 133cm, square stone plinths 50cm wide, 50cm deep, her stone plinth is also weathered and covered in moss, the companion figure with a similar amount of algae but less oxidisation and weathering, standing on a much neater square plinth which is made from composition and a stone plinth made to match hers, again with far less weathering and rubbing, his height to the bottom of the lead 131cm, overall height 161cm.
