A 17th century style oak and elm refectory table with cleated top, carved frieze and six turned legs united by all round stretchers, 284cm long, 88cm wide, 76cm high Probably dates to the 19th century and is constructed partially with older timbers, attractive overall appearance, the top is somewhat weathered with splits running through the grain and old worm holes throughout, tips to each end look like replacements, frieze is a little shallowly carved and somewhat worn, under frame with old wear commensurate with use, feet probably somewhat cut down. A William III inlaid walnut chest, formerly a chest on stand, with geometric veneered top, two short and three long drawers, on a shaped foot, 100cm wide, 59cm deep, 97cm high This started life as a chest on stand so would have had elaborate legs and stretchers etc., now converted to a standing chest, the top has been re-veneered in an appropriate style but still has some dents and scuffs from use, top drawers are a little stiff and lack both locks, handles and escutcheons are later, pine drawer lining paper lined but not rather tatty. An early 18th century figured and burr walnut cabinet on chest, with moulded cornice and two bevelled mirrored doors enclosing an arrangement of eight drawers and a slide over four further graduated long drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 110cm wide, 52cm deep, 199cm high Good condition, renovated and restored some years ago, of even rich mid honey brown tone, has probably seen a fair degree of restoration with re-building of the cornice, additions of the feet and quite possibly some re-modelling between the chest and the cabinet itself. Upper lock and handles look original, key for the upper lock does not work, locks to the lower chest look original but one is missing from the second drawer down, no key present. A little more faded down the right hand side with some splitting in the veneers. John Cheere (English, 1709-1787), a cast lead figure of a Shepherdess, together with a later companion casting of a shepherd, shepherdess overall 161cm high Gorringe’s are grateful to John Davis for verifying the authenticity of the figure of the fruit seller. For a comparable figure, see his publication - Antique Garden Ornament, Antique Collectors Club, 1991, page 65. Provenance: Purchased from Mallet, London, in the 1950’s, thereafter a private collection near Ardingly, West Sussex. She in honest but weathered condition with oxidisation and algae scattered throughout, the textured square base is probably a later addition, standing upon an old and possibly original stone plinth, height of lady to base of her shoe 124cm, from base of the lead 133cm, square stone plinths 50cm wide, 50cm deep, her stone plinth is also weathered and covered in moss, the companion figure with a similar amount of algae but less oxidisation and weathering, standing on a much neater square plinth which is made from composition and a stone plinth made to match hers, again with far less weathering and rubbing, his height to the bottom of the lead 131cm, overall height 161cm.
