Two Japanese Mino ware blue and white vases, by Kato Gosuke IV (active c.1863-1898), the first painted with a peacock and peahen in a landscape with diaper pattern borders, the second with lotus, pondweed and crabs, each with underglaze blue mark to base ‘nihon mino-kuni kato gosuke tsukuru (Made by Kato Gosuke in Mino province, Japan), 18cm high, firing cracks Kato Gosuke was a renowned painter of birds and flowers who went on to win several awards at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle. cf. a small blue and white vase with butterflies and vines by Kato Gosuke IV (1839–1905) in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore. The vase painted with peacocks has an open firing crack to the edge of the foot, the second vase painted with lotus has an overglaze firing crack to the shoulder, otherwise they are both in reasonable condition, a little grubby in places. A pair of Chinese Transitional wucai vases and covers, Shunzhi / early Kangxi, late 17th century, painted with flowering chrysanthemums amongst foliage, below a band of ‘cracked ice’ and leaf lappets, unglazed base, 38cm high, damage Provenance - handwritten letter, stating that the vases were given to a Mrs. Mary Collins by sailors at Greenwich, around 1770-1780. Typical minor glaze faults throughout. One cover has a section at the rim that has been broken away and re glued with some splinter losses in this area, it also has a shallow glaze chip to the finial and a splinter chip to the rim. Other cover has two very small splinter chips to the inner rim. Both covers have fritting to edges. One vase has a piece missing at the rim with a large hairline crack emanating from it, approx 23cm. Another horizontal crescent shaped hairline crack crosses this one approx 12cm down from the rim. There is a shallow chip to the rim. The other vase has a section at the rim that has been broken away and re attached, previously stapled but with holes now filled. A large hairline crack starts at the rim, runs around the body and reaches back at the rim, on the opposite side. There are eight staples and some filler along this crack. Several light surface scuffs and scratches throughout. A Chinese export gilt and famille rose teapot, Yongzheng / Qianlong period, finely painted to each side with the figures of a family in an interior, a garden beyond, gilt scrollwork borders, lacking cover, 9cm, faults Typical minor glaze imperfections. A splinter chip visible to the spout tip with two smaller splinter chips in the same area. Two adjacent crescent shaped cracks to the foot rim are visible and have almost met to create a loss.
