Philip North Brockedon was educated as a civil engineer, and was favourite pupil of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but sadly died of consumption at the age of 28, on 13 November 1849. George Finch Mason (1850-1915) 'Roughside Wins! - The Chester Cup, 1900', signed lower left, titled lower right, watercolour and bodycolour, 26cm x 36cm The Chester Cup is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 2 miles, 2 furlongs and 140 yards (3,749 metres) at Chester in May. The event was established in 1824, and it was originally called the Tradesmen's Cup. It was initially a limited handicap with a minimum weight of 8st 2lb.?For a period the race was known as the Tradesmen's Plate. During this time it was open to horses aged three or older. George Finch Mason (1850-1915) 'Rock Sand Wins! - The Derby, 1903', signed lower left, titled lower right, watercolour and bodycolour, 20.5cm x 36cm Rock Sand (1900–1914) was a British Thoroughbred race horse and sire. In a career which lasted from the spring of 1902 until October 1904 he ran twenty times and won sixteen races. He was a leading British two-year-old of his generation and the winner of the British Triple Crown, having won the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, The Derby, and the St. Leger Stakes. He won another series of major races as a four-year-old before being retired to stud, where he had success in both Europe and North America. George Finch Mason (1850-1915) 'Flying Fox Wins! - The Derby, 1899', signed lower left, titled lower right, watercolour and bodycolour, 22.5cm x 36cm Flying Fox was a very difficult colt to handle and only raced for two years. However, he met with enormous success under trainer John Porter, whom the National Horseracing Museum says was "undoubtedly the most successful trainer of the Victorian era." Flying Fox won three of his five starts at age two, and then at age three went undefeated while becoming only the 8th horse in history to win the Triple Crown. In his sixth and last race of his season and of his career, he won the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. John Beer (c.1860-c.1930) 'The Last Fence, The Grand National, 1909', signed lower right, titled lower left, watercolour and bodycolour, 25cm x 35cm The 1909 Grand National was won by Lutteur III, at the relatively young age of 5, one of a handful to do so. More significantly, his win was a vindication for French breeders, who had seen the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and the Grand Hurdle at Auteuil frequently won by channel-crossing English-breds. His sire, St. Damien, won the Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot, and was retired to stud in France; he became the leading sire of jumpers there between 1904 and 1911. John Beer (c.1860-c.1930) 'The Princess of Wales Stakes, Newmarket, 1909', signed lower left, titled lower right, watercolour and bodycolour, 24.5cm x 35cm The Princess of Wales's Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to Thoroughbred horses aged three years or older. It is run on the July Course at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (2,414 metres), and takes place each year in July. The event is named in honour of Alexandra of Denmark, who became the Princess of Wales in 1863. It was established in 1894, and the 1909 race was won by Dark Ronald, who also won the Royal Hunt Cup that year. John Beer (c.1860-c.1930) 'The Finish for the Royal Hunt Cup - Ascot, 1909', signed and titled lower right, watercolour and bodycolour, 24.5cm x 35cm The Royal Hunt Cup is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres). The 1909 race was won by Dark Ronald, who also won the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket in the same year. The event was established in 1843, and it was originally contested on a right-handed course over 7 furlongs and 166 yards. The inaugural running was won by Knight of the Whistle, with a triple dead-heat for second between Bourra Tomacha, Epaulette, and Garry Owen.
