A large early George II silver salver, by Humphrey Payne, engraved with the Lowth and Tregonwell family crests, of shaped circular form, with large central engraved crest and stepped pie crust border, on four hoof feet, London, 1732, diameter 38.8cm, 55oz. Robert Lowth (1710-1787) was a significant figure in the 18th-century Church of England, culminating in his appointment as Bishop of London in 1777, a position he held until his death. A distinguished scholar of Hebrew and classical literature, Lowth notably served as Professor of Poetry at Oxford University and later as Bishop of St. David's and then Oxford before his translation to the prestigious see of London. Even offered the Archbishopric of Canterbury, he declined due to failing health, marking the end of a career that blended ecclesiastical leadership with influential contributions to biblical scholarship and English grammar.
