After Genryusai Seiya, a large patinated bronze group of two tigers on a riverbank, bears seal stamp, 35.5cm high, 59cm longPlease note we believe this bronze to be a high-quality reproduction the description has been changed and the estimate has been reduced to £300-£500 as it is a big decorative bronze group. There are some minor casting imperfections such as tiny indentations to the surface all over, the patination is fairly even all over otherwise in very good condition.

A group of three Pre-Columbian Nayarit polychrome seated figures, Western Mexico, 200 BC - AD 250, the largest a partial figure of a ball player, 27cm Provenance - Walter Civardi (1910-1996) Professor Emeritus Pratt Institute Walter Civardi, who established the photographic department of Pratt Institute in New York, was a keen collector of Pre-Columbian Art from Ancient Western Mexico. His extensive collection focuses principally on the regional styles of Colima, Jalisco, Nyarit and Chupicuaro. These outstanding pieces were created between 1,150 BC to 250 AD. In 1949, 1950 and 1953, he travelled to Mexico with his colleague and fellow educator, artist and scholar, Ivan Rigby. Both Walter and Ivan had a keen eye for design and composition through their professions and were very discerning in their selection of fine artefacts from primitive cultures. They particularly liked the pieces that reflected a lively interest in daily life. Many artists, such as Henry Moore, Picasso, Braque, Corbusier, Calder and Dali, whom Ivan visited in their Paris studios, all valued the sophistication and simplicity of design of these pre-Colombian art pieces. They drew on them extensively in their own work. Diego Rivera was also a great admirer and had an impressive collection himself. He used Western Mexican forms conspicuously in a variety of his works. Several pieces in Walter Civardi's collection have been exhibited in New York City.

NOTE Edwin Otho Sachs (1870–1919) was a British architect, engineer, fire prevention expert, and author, best known for transforming theatre safety and design. Born in London to German parents, he studied engineering at University College London and architecture in Berlin. Sachs gained hands-on experience with fire brigades in Berlin, Vienna, and Paris before returning to Britain, where he became Vice-President of the National Fire Brigades’ Union and founded the British Fire Prevention Committee in 1897. A passionate advocate for public safety, Sachs authored influential works on fire prevention and theatre design, including the three-volume Modern Opera Houses and Theatres (1896–1898). In 1898, he became Technical Adviser to the Royal Opera House, overseeing major innovations like electrified stage machinery and advanced fire-safety systems. He also modernised the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Sachs was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1904 and served as Vice-President of the International Fire Service Council. He was also Vice-President of the Magic Circle and an amateur magician. He died in London aged 49. Sachs’ legacy lies in his pioneering contributions to theatre engineering and public safety, which influenced venue standards across Europe for decades to come.

Attributed to Alfred Jacob Miller (American, 1810-1874) A Native American slaying a buffalo (American Bison), circa 1840, watercolour heightened with white, 19.5cm x 23.5cm Provenance: Probably commissioned by Sir William Drummond Stewart, 7th Baronet (1795–1871) Apparently from the collection of John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane (1796-1862) Sir Wm Drummond Stewart, Laird of Murthly Castle, travelled extensively through the American West, hiring Miller to travel with him and record his expeditions. In 1840 he commissioned Miller to come to Scotland and paint a serious of Western American scenes for Murthly Castle. On the trip Miller also spent time at Taymouth Castle, producing family portraits for the Marqius of Breadalbane. It was here that Miller also dined with Queen Victoria, who was making a tour of the Highlands. It is believed that Miller produced the work offered here whilst in Scotland, possibly as a potential work for Murthly Castle. By repute however, this work was part of the collection of the Marquess of Breadalbane, and was listed in the 1863 Christie’s inventory that followed his death in 1862 (No 1199 - Drawing Room Scrap Book value £2 - 6).
