John Ebsworth, Londini fecit, a 17th century brass lantern clock, with weight driven movement and verge escapement, striking the hours on a bell set below the bell strap, the six-inch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and half-hour markings, with tulip engraving to the centre and signed `John Ebsworth at ye `cross keys` in Lothbury, Londini`, the `cross keys` being an engraved depiction, the case with typical turned finials, pillars and feet, with brass dolphin frets to the top, 14.5in.
John Ebsworth was a pre-eminent and important early clockmaker who was apprenticed to Richard Aymes on the 23rd of February 1657, becoming free on the 3rd of April 1665. He was an assistant to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1682 becoming a warden between 1694 and 1696 and finally Master in 1697. He worked at the Cross Keys, Lothbury, London and may well have succeeded the famous lantern clock maker Thomas Knifton. He died in 1699 with his will proven in September of that year.
