CHIPPENDALE, THOMAS (1718 -79). THE GENTLEMAN AND CABINET-MAKER’S DIRECTOR, London 1755, 2nd Ed., folio, contemporary calf, scuffed, with engraved dedication and 161 plates, title page worn, browned and with fold marks and small tears, backboard almost detached.
Thomas Chippendale (probably born at Otley, West Riding of Yorkshire, 1718 - November 1779). After working as a journeyman cabinet maker in London in 1754, he became the first cabinet-maker to publish a book of his designs, titled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker`s Director. Three editions were published, the first in 1754, followed by a virtual reprint in 1755 and finally a revised and enlarged edition in 1762.

Postage and packing can be arranged by the Auctioneers and will be charged at cost of postage/delivery plus an minimum charge of £10 for the first Lot and £2 for each additional lot larger items may attract a higher fee Lot. Insurance can be arranged subject to the terms of the carriers. However all packing will be at the purchaser’s risk. Gorringes recommend Mailboxes and Alban Shipping for high value or delicate items.
