A 17th century stumpwork, metal purl and beadwork panel, 21 x 17in., faults and fading, framed and glazed
A 17th century stumpwork, metal purl and beadwork panel, on an ivory coloured satin ground, worked in polychrome silks in a variety of stitches, the central oval reserve depicting King Solomon greeting the arrival of the Queen of Sheba, the ground decorated with flowers, trees, insects, hare & hound, lion & stag and oak sprigs with acorns, the corners with oval reserves with figures emblematic of the Four Continents, 21 x 17in., faults and fading, framed and glazed
Provenance; Major M.R.Goulden, thence by descent, previously on loan to Tunbridge Wells Museum.
By family tradition this stumpwork panel has been handed down in a direct line of the family. The Goulden family descend from French Huguenots who settled in Spitalfields. They were weavers and silk throsters and it is recorded that two members of the family were apprenticed to the weavers of London in 1630.
By family tradition the date 1679 was once visible on one of the townscape pennants now obliterated.
Literature; Embroidery magazine, Summer 1953, p50-51 and 62 and Fig. 48, article `A Fine Stump Work Sampler`.
