Frantisek Xaver Naske (1884-1959)
oil on canvas,
Czech Independence Parade,
signed and dated 29X 1910,
44 x 36in.
The 28th was the actual date of declaration
of an Independent Czechoslovak Republic.
President Woodrow Wilson and France
had recognised a Czechoslovak Provisional
Government in exile, earlier in 1918, but
the actual Declaration of Independence
was given by Tomas Masaryk to Wilson, the`
Washington Declaration`, on October 14th.
Both American and French flags are evident in the Celebration. The `Independence Day` celebration is in Wenceslas Square, Prague. The buildings depicted include the National Museum and, I think, the National
Library. Today, Czechs still celebrate Independence Day, despite it having been for Czechoslovakia in 1918.
