Emil Hoppe (Austrian, 1876-1957). An extensive modernist suite of drinking glasses, designed c.1906, manufacture by Bakalowitz & Son, including eight hock glasses with green flashed square panel cut bowls and multi-facetted stems and sixteen sided feet, 6.9in., the remaining suite of clear glass with conical shaped facet cut bowls, multi-facetted stems and polygonal and circular feet, together with a panel cut ovoid water jug, 8in. (84)

Examples of glasses from this suite designed by Emil Hoppe are illustrated in The Studio 1907 Year book under the heading `Modern Decorative Art in Austria` next to designs by Otto Prutscher. Emil Hoppe was a renowned Viennese architect who played an important part in defining Viennese modernism in the years immediately preceding WWI. From 1902 to 1909 he worked as an assistant in Otto Wagner`s studio on major architectural projects and like the architect, Otto Prutscher, took time to design glassware for the firm of Bakalowitz.
