John Willis Good (British, 1845-1879). The Tired Hunter, signed `J. Willis Good` (on the base), bronze, with brown patina, height: 14¾ in.
Specializing in animalier and hunting groups, John Willis Good frequently exhibited works at the Royal Academy during the 1870s. The Tired Hunter is an excellent example of Willis Good`s ouevre as a talented sporting portraitist. The identity of the horse represented in this particular portrait has been cleverly executed by the artist in the addition of a fox`s mask on the saddle, indicating this hunter possibly belonged to Fred Gregory, a renowned master of foxhounds during the 1870s (see C. Payne, Animals in Bronze, Woodbridge, 1986, p. 300).
