A case of twelve bottles of Chateau Latour 1995, Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, owc.
A case of twelve bottles of Chateau Latour 1995, Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, owc. It`s probably fair to say that, over the long term, and in Bordeaux that means 100 years, 200 years, maybe more, Chateau Latour has been the greatest (red) wine of the region and some would say, ergo, the world. No other first growth can boast as many successes over such a long period as Latour; one may count 1928, 1929, 1945, 1959, 1961, 1970, 1982, & 1990 among its illustrious vintages (probably all still drinking), not to mention many more recent wines mostly still too young to drink . Unlike the other firsts, however, its ownership history has been rather more troubled and it is perhaps testimony to the greatness of its terroir, on the gravel ridge overlooking the Gironde, that accounts for its extraordinary consistency despite regime changes and the waxing and waning fortunes of the trade. Anyone who has tasted Latour, and I`ve been privileged to have tasted (and drunk) a few, to include 1955, 1990, and 2000, cannot fail to be captivated by the effortless combination of the seemingly incompatible attributes of finesse and fullness that the best vintages display. The nose alone, of brooding blackcurrant, cedar, and graphite, is almost the essence of great wine and at once puts to the bed the idea that wine is simply the application of science to agriculture.
