A case of twelve bottles of Chateau Lafite 1995, Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, owc.
A case of twelve bottles of Chateau Lafite 1995, Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, owc. Historically the great first growth rival of Latour, a rivalry joined at official first growth level in recent decades by Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. Lafite, too, is owned by the Rothschilds, different branches of the family having purchased both estates in the 1850s and `60s. Ranked top among the firsts in 1855, the reputation of Lafite has not always kept pace with its status although since the 1980s it has once again returned very much to the top table. One hesitates to say to the top of the top table as, ultimately, one`s preference among the very best wines will be a matter of taste and Lafite has always prided itself, perhaps more than Latour or Mouton, for the understated elegance of its wines. Nevertheless, in recent years, the market has seen things rather differently and the price of Lafite between 2008 and 2011 soared far above the other firsts as it became the wine of choice for elites in China, Honk Kong, and elsewhere. Tougher trading conditions in luxury goods markets and a change in the political mood in China have brought about something of a market correction, but for now Lafite remains, generally with Latour, as the most expensive left-bank Bordeaux, a situation unlikely to change in any foreseeable future.
